Shall be subject to drug and alcohol testing, pursuant to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations (49 CFR Part 40), and either the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (49 CFR Part 382), or the Federal Transit Administration's Regulations (49 CFR Part 655) as applicable.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND/OR CERTIFICATES:
Must possess and maintain a valid WA driver license. Must possess/obtain and maintain a Basic First Aid, including CPR and AED, a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with airbrake endorsement, and a Forklift Operators certification within six (6) months of employment. Certifications by the Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Medium-Heavy Truck series are preferred.
Job Summary
Essential Functions
Uses manual and computerized diagnostic equipment and communicates with users to identify equipment problems, and/or repairs equipment to restore to original equipment manufacturers (OEM) tolerances and standards. Works on a wide variety of equipment including automobiles, pickup trucks, medium and heavy duty trucks, construction equipment, public transit buses, refuse trucks and compactors, tractors, golf course greens keeping machinery and mowers, and median maintenance equipment such as flail mowers and brush hogs, two-cycle and four-cycle lawn and garden equipment, and other tools and equipment.
Repairs, overhauls or rebuilds gas or diesel engines, pumps, transmissions, carburetors, hydraulic cylinders and systems, alternators, generators, brake systems, electrical and electronic systems including multiplexing, drive trains, suspension systems, steering, carburetion and fuel injection systems, emission systems, exhaust systems, wheel chair and other accessibility assistance systems, and other equipment. Operates lathes, valve refacers, drills and other shop machines; uses acetylene and arc welding equipment in fabricating and repairing equipment; tests and repairs electrical systems; modifies or repairs exhaust systems. Records repairs and inspection of vehicles and equipment.
Assists with annual inventory of parts and equipment.
Dispenses gas and diesel fuel to vehicles and equipment; picks up parts as necessary. Repairs and maintains shop equipment.
Ensures individual work area is clean and organized to maintain accessibility and prevent accidents and unsafe conditions.
Demonstrates an attitude that encourages cooperation and coordination of efforts and efficient use of resources. Provides continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and works cooperatively and jointly to consistently provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
Requires regular and reliable attendance.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Major Worker Characteristics
Ability to: use hand and power tools; arc, acetylene and other welding equipment; diagnose problems, perform routine and preventive maintenance; and operate manual and computerized diagnostic and related test equipment; perform strenuous work and occasionally lift heavy objects; operate a personal computer and other standard office equipment; read, research, understand and utilize equipment repair resources to include instruction manuals, applicable websites and other sources of information. Must maintain accurate records; perform basic mathematical calculations efficiently and accurately; and troubleshoot and resolve issues effectively.
Ability to work independently with self-direction; maintain sustained attention to detail and work under timeline pressures; prioritize; manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines. Excellent analytical and organizational skills are essential. Must possess ability to quickly adapt to changing priorities and demands.
Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively, with employees, and members of the public representing diverse levels of education and background, utilizing well-developed communication skills, both written and oral, with appropriate use of English. Must routinely and regularly maintain confidentiality and discretion through all forms of communication.
Ability to establish, facilitate, and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, other departments, outside vendors and other members of the public, continually demonstrate tact, diplomacy, and respect to individuals, groups and organizations representing a wide diversity of ethnicities, cultures, opinions, and beliefs. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is performed primarily indoors. This position requires significant physical ability and hand/eye/foot coordination and dexterity including: frequent sitting, standing and walking for prolonged periods on concrete surfaces; lifting and carrying parts, tools and equipment; pushing/pulling or forcibly moving heavy parts and equipment. Continuous use of both hands and arms in reaching/handling/grasping/fingering while performing fine motor skills including computer keyboarding and operating/working on various vehicles, equipment and machinery. On rare occasions may be required to lift heavier weight with assistance of others or mechanical devices up to 100 pounds. Occasionally ascends/descends stairs, ladders, and inclines while maintaining balance. Physical strength and ability sufficient to perform manual labor for extended periods under extreme wet and cold, and generally unpleasant conditions. Continuously bending/twisting at knees/waist/neck/wrists while performing mechanical repairs and maintenance items. Occasional kneeling/crouching/crawling while making repairs in awkward positions and/or cramped quarters. May work at heights, alone, with others, or in noisy work area. Continuous use of all senses including feeling/talking/hearing/seeing/smelling while performing duties and while communicating with co-workers, general public and completing all tasks as assigned. Must be able to distinguish color and maintain long-term and short-term memory. Will be required to wear safety protective gear. UNUSUAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
May work outside with all weather extremes. Routinely exposed to heat, cold, dust, dirt, insects, smoke, electrical hazards, noxious odors, fumes, vapors, chemicals, loud equipment and motor noise, and/or unsanitary conditions related to refuse and sewer equipment. Driving/travel short distances may be required. May perform shift work and overtime may be required including but not limited to extension of the work day. Must provide and maintain in the workplace a set of tools as required.
